Maintenance

MAINTAINING VITAMIN D LEVELS

A maintenance period should be considered 1 month after the loading dose period with doses equivalent to 20 µg/day (800 IU) to 50 µg/day (2000 IU) daily (occasionally up to 100 µg/day (4,000 IU daily), given either daily or intermittently at a higher equivalent dose.1  The National Osteoporosis Society also advises that adjusted serum calcium levels should be measured one month after completing the loading regime or after commencing vitamin D supplementation in case primary hyperparathyroidism has been unmasked.1
